The Science Behind Exercise Rehabilitation

The 2019 and 2020 Canadian Pain Task Force confirms that Exercise, Movement and Physical Intervention are essential for the care and management of injuries including chronic impairments

Exercise and Movement can relieve your pain by:

  • Improving circulation
  • Lubricating Joints
  • Reducing swelling and inflammation
  • Boosting Mood
  • Blocking pain receptors
  • Reducing blood pressure and blood sugar

Workout Programs

Our workout plans incorporate the following types of exercise

  • Aerobic - “continuous movement of all major muscle groups acting in a coordinated manner to produce a cardio-metabolic stimulus”
    • Performing this at 50-60% of max HR has analgesic effect on Chronic Pain Pathology;
  • Strength – the contraction of muscles to overcome resistance
    • This can be effective in chronic pain, being well tolerated and achieving better results when land-based exercises;
  • Stretch – improve joint ROM, muscle flexibility; promote neuromuscular training to improve balance, posture, coordination; have little effect on pain when performed on their own, may have impact on emotional level – recommended to include within training programs that include other exercises

The food that someone eats can have a significant impact on their level of pain or inflammation. Certain foods, such as processed and high-fat foods, can increase inflammation in the body, leading to discomfort and pain. On the other hand, a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help reduce inflammation and alleviate pain. For example, foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon and walnuts, have anti-inflammatory properties that can help ease joint pain and stiffness. Additionally, some spices like turmeric and ginger have been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects. By making conscious choices about the food we eat, we can potentially decrease our pain levels and improve our overall health.

Our Active Rehabilitation Programs incorporate support and guidance on nutrition and lifestyle habits that can have a tangible impact on a patient’s pain levels, mobility, function, mental health and overall well-being.
